Dental fillings in Washington Heights

Dentist in Washington Heights

If you have a pain in your tooth when you eat something sweet, you may have a dental cavity. Should this be the case, visit us at our dental practice, Elliott Gutman, DMD where you can have your cavity treated by our top-notch dentist, Dr. Elliott Gutman. Our dentist in Washington Heights will be able to treat your cavity and then fill it with a choice of dental filling materials.

When patients come to see our dentist in Washington Heights for treatment of a dental cavity, they are happy to learn that they can have their tooth filled with one of two different types of filling materials. We offered traditional silver amalgam fillings as well as tooth-colored composite fillings. Both of these types of fillings have their own benefits. Our dentist will generally make a recommendation on which type of filling material should be used based on the size and location of the cavity. If the cavity is on the flat chewing surface of a back molar, our dentist will most likely recommend that you get a silver amalgam filling which is much stronger and can more easily stand up to vigorous chewing forces. However, if the dental decay is on a portion of a tooth that shows when you speak or smile, our dentist may likely recommend that you receive a dental filling using a tooth-colored composite filling material. While this filling material is much more aesthetically pleasing, it is not as strong as a traditional silver amalgam filling, and will not be able to stand up to breakage as easily. However, when a tooth is filled with a composite filling, less tooth enamel needs to be removed due to the process that is used to install a composite filling. Composite fillings are actually bonded to the tooth which serves to strengthen the tooth. When the filling is completed, it will perfectly color-match the tooth that it is applied to so no one will be able to tell that you have the filling in place.
