dental office in New York NY we offer silver amalgam fillings as well as tooth-colored composite resin fillings. Our dentist will recommend which type of filling material to use based on the size and location of the cavity. Both of these fillings have their advantages and even drawbacks. The traditional silver amalgam fillings are extremely strong and will last for a very long time. They are generally recommended for larger cavities and when the cavity is on the flat chewing surface of a back molar. However, these fillings are not particularly attractive. Additionally, more tooth enamel needs to be removed in order for the filling to be installed. The tooth-colored composite fillings are extremely aesthetically pleasing. This is because the tooth-colored fillings will perfectly match your tooth color so that no one will be able to see it once the filling is applied to your tooth. Additionally, less tooth enamel is needed to be removed in order to install these fillings. These fillings are bonded to the tooth and will actually strengthen the tooth. However, tooth-colored composite fillings are not as strong as silver amalgam fillings, and can more easily chip or crack. They also cannot withstand the vigorous chewing forces in the same manner that silver amalgam fillings can. Tooth-colored composite fillings are generally used on the front teeth where it is important for the filling to provide a natural appearance. They can also be used on back teeth depending on the size and location of the cavity.
